Friends of Madagascar Mission guarantees that 100% of a gift given to us will be spent on the mission project for which it is designated. Nothing will be taken out of a gift to pay for our administration costs, but we invite donors to also give gifts to our Administrative Account.
Friends of Madagascar Mission does not create or determine the projects which we will support. The projects are requested by the Malagasy Lutheran Church.
Current Fundraising Priority
Flowers and a meal at a nice meal in a restaurant are nice, but with Covid-19 restrictions this year we have a unique idea for how you can make Mother's Day truly special and meaningful by making a donation to a life-changing program helping teenage girls in Madagascar stay in school and make good life choices. Consider making them a sponsor in recognition of a Mother or any woman whom you know exemplifies those qualities, or in memory of your own or your spouse's mother.
When you donate and include an email address, we will send a thank you letter including the girl's name, bio, and subsequently you will receive two letters a year, which you can forward to the person you are honoring. Here is the necessary information on the project
NOFY i ANDROY
The Androy region, located in south-western Madagascar, is one of the poorest regions of the country. The region suffers from periodic drought, famine and harmful cultural practices. The local tribe has been a male dominated culture which has limited the value of women and girls to baby production and raising a family. As a result the Androy region has alarmingly high rates of child marriage and child pregnancies making the adolescent girls much more likely to drop out of school and often harming their health. Parents trapped in desperate poverty have been documented to marry off their daughters as young as ten years old as a quick fix to their financial problems, and the often much older husbands frequently prevent the girls from attending school and reaching their highest potentials.
Meta Paubert Kaurin began Nofy i Androy as a result of being one of these teen moms, a high school dropout and enduring bullying. It took her years to go back to school and find the courage to finish university and be back on her feet. The program tutors students from the public school to receive scholarship support through middle, high school and onto the university if they so choose. The teacher student ratio in kept low for best results and incorporates a curriculum and atmosphere of female empowerment, individual motivation and self-confidence.
